Q: I wear dentures. Can implants help me?
A: Most definitely! Advanced technology means implant dentures can be permanently fixed or the teeth can be snapped on and off their fixings by the patient. The advantages of either procedure include: a harmonious fit with your gums, the possibility of improved speech and taste, natural chewing function and bite, no more tilting and the end of pressure spot discomfort, restored chewing ability, improved diet, no more jaw bone erosion and . . . the smile of your dreams.

Q: What can I do about loose dentures?
A: The clinically preferred solution is to have implant-retained dentures. These teeth are guaranteed to resolve any stabilisation problems. They will look and function like your own teeth and offer huge efficiencies over traditional dentures. Findings at a symposium at the McGill University in Quebec, Canada, suggested the first choice option of dental professionals for people who had no lower jaw teeth, was a prosthetic fixed by two implants. Patients reported that implant-retained dentures were significantly more stable, comfortable, and chewing and speaking was easier.

Q: What is a dental implant?
A: Dental implants look and feel exactly like natural teeth and can be used to replace a single or several teeth. They are a permanent feature, enjoy a very high success rate and are a good alternative to traditional dentures, crowns and bridges.

Q: Am I a suitable candidate?
A: Yes, but you need to have a healthy mouth. If there are oral issues we will address them before implant surgery. A good candidate for treatment is one who is healthy and prepared to look after their teeth. Some health conditions and medical treatments will preclude some candidates.

Q: What is an abutment?
A: The abutment is mechanism used to connect the implant to crowns, bridges or dentures.

Q: What do implants look like?
A: Titanium dental implants are small screw-like mechanisms that are inserted into the jaw bond.
**They are between 8 to 14mm long and between 3.3 and 4.8mm diameter.

Q: Why is bone grafting necessary?
A: Synthetic bone grafting, known as guided bone regeneration, is frequently necessary at the time of implant placement.
**If bone that once supported teeth has been eroded it needs to be replaced to support the implant and gum around the restoration.

Q: What is a periodontist?
A: A periodontist is a dentist with a specialism in periodontology – a discipline which focuses on the supporting structures of teeth and the treatment of conditions that affect them.
**Typically, work involves the treatment of gums and procedures include addressing ‘gummy smiles’ using micro surgery, and bone grafting.

Trust us: What you can expect after treatment

Bleeding : Initially you will feel numb and it may be hard to speak. You may also experience some swelling and a little bleeding from around implant area. This is normal and any bleeding will generally ease off after 24 hours.
*To ease bleeding you can bite on a folded pad of gauze for one hour. Do not replace the pad during this time. Keep your head elevated and apply external cooling to your cheek. Do not have hot drinks.
*Pain : If pain occurs, you can take an over the counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication (NSAID) such as
ibuprofen or paracetamol for a few days. Do not exceed the recommended dosage printed on the packaging.
*The first 24 hours : Don’t disturb any clot that forms on the wound, as this will prevent further bleeding or infection. Do not rinse your mouth or brush your teeth for 24 hours following surgery.
*We use local anaesthetics for dental implant work so it is very important to avoid hot drinks or chewing while the anaesthesia is still working. There is a significant danger of burning or biting yourself.
*For the first 10 days : When brushing teeth avoid the implant area and use the antibacterial mouthwash as prescribed. Following this pereiod a toothbrush with special soft bristles can be used for cleaning the area around the wound.
*Diet : Do not stop eating and drinking as it is important to stay well nourished and hydrated to promote healing. Avoid coffee, alcohol and cigarettes for two to three days. This reduces the risk of post-surgical bleeding and encouraged healing.
*Smokers : We would strongly advise that you do not smoke during the implant treatment.

First consultation
**Consultations take about 40 minutes and they are informal and friendly.
**The key to implant success is the quality and quantity of bone at the proposed implant site.
**To accurately assess suitability for the dental implants the following procedures may be undertaken:
• Assessment of existing teeth by clinical examination a

nd dental radiographs
• Assessment of the soft mouth tissue, bone erosion and jaw joint
**Procedure
**Having implant-retained teeth fitted usually involves a two-stage procedure. Firstly, the titanium implants are set into the jawbone and then a few weeks later after gums have recovered, the prosthetic is attached.
How does it work?
**A small incision is made in the gums in order to expose the jawbone. The site is prepared with an implant drill and the implant is screwed in. In the healing process which follows, the bone fuses with the titanium pin to create a strong fixing point. This normally takes about eight weeks.
**The second stage involves the fixing of the replacement teeth anchors, known as abutments. A single tooth, muliple teeth or a whole denture can then be attached. Implant retained dentures can be permanently fixed or clipped into position.
**Surgical fees include all materials. Additional fees apply for bone or soft tissue grafting but this will be made known following the initial clinical assessment and before any procedure begins.

has been placing implants since 1989 and uses a minimally invasive technique.
**The implants are small titanium threaded pins that screw into the jawbone and are effectively replacement tooth roots. Occasionally, a synthetic bone graft will be required to create a secure fixing point for the pin if the natural jawbone has eroded through age.
**The procedure for fixing four implants to retain, for example, an upper denture, would normally take about eight to nine weeks from initial consultation to having the teeth loaded on to fixings. Using implants does not preclude other restorative dental procedures.

**Periodontics is a practice which looks at the supporting structures of your teeth – the clever, natural mechanisms that hold them firmly in place, and the condition of your gums. Periodontal diseases take on many forms and untreated can lead to bone and tooth loss.
**Mr Carl Horton BDS MSc PG CertPeriodontology is responsible for delivering the practice’s periodontics care. He is an accomplished micro surgeon, carries out gum realignment/grafting procedures, surgically addresses ‘gummy smiles’, undertakes bone grafting and other procedures he describes as “the equivalent to keyhole surgery.”
**His work also embraces highly complex referrals as well as dealing with more common gum-related conditions and aesthetics care.

Dentures

Endodontics

Root canal or endodontic treatment is carried out to save teeth which have damaged or infected roots. It deals with the tooth pulp found in the root, the tissues surrounding the root and the subsequent reconstruction of the tooth above the gum line.
**Where ever possible we will always attempt to salvage teeth, but in compromised cases our dentists may recommend the option of an implant.
